Atmospheric live recordings from The TANK – a cavernous seven-story former water tank with a stunning reverberation of up to 40 seconds – featuring low flutes, bamboo flutes, ocarina, Mayan flute and Native American flute along with hand pan drums, Turkish lute and metal found objects.

On a hot, late August evening, we experienced The TANK for the first time. A cavernous seven-story water tank that has never been used to store water, The TANK is a center for sonic arts in the dry Northwestern end of Colorado, where musicians can feel they’ve traveled through space with their music.

We immediately fell in love with the sonic experience. The heat of the early evening put us in a mild trance and our first recordings are very slow and still. As the evening cooled off, we explored blending our instruments with their notes reverberating for up to 40 seconds. The recordings from the middle of the evening feel adventurous and playful.

  1. Hanging Lake - Suzanne Teng, alto flute/Gilbert Levy, Hang drum Our opening track, “Hanging Lake” features the Hang drum and alto flute, one of our favorite combinations of instruments. On our way traveling from our home in Santa Fe, New Mexico to Rangely, Colorado, the home of The TANK, we stopped to hike to the top of a mountain to see the glorious Hanging Lake. It was worth the effort of climbing, during a very warm afternoon, the rocky terrain of what was equivalent to 80 stories! Stunningly gorgeous with its many hues of green, powerful waterfalls and rock formations, it is a truly inspiration place. We wanted to remember this magical lake through our music.

  2. Shimmer - Suzanne Teng, bamboo flute “Shimmer,” the title track, is an emotional bamboo flute journey that reflects the sensations I felt from the shimmer of sound while playing upwards to the top of The Tank.

  3. And the Crickets Sing - Suzanne Teng, bass flute “And the Crickets Sing” - Near the end of our evening at The TANK, with the door open and the cool breeze gracing us, the crickets came to sing with my bass flute. What a treat it was.

  4. Mother and Child - Suzanne Teng, Mayan flute (4Wind Flutes) “Mother and Child” - Years ago, a wonderful flute maker, Brad Young, gifted me with this stunning wooden two-chambered flute that is modeled after an ancient clay Mayan flute. With the lower and higher chambers playing both together and to one another, I heard a dialogue between a mother and her child.

  5. Harmonic Dance - Suzanne Teng, bass flute “Harmonic Dance” is the last thing that I played in The TANK. I felt free to really let loose and when I found myself exploring different harmonics on my bass flute, I had such a good time just following the flow. This is one my of my favorite tracks on the album.

  6. Catch Me if You Can - Suzanne Teng, alto flute/Gilbert Levy, RAV hand pan “Catch Me If You Can” feels like its title…he on his RAV hand pan and me on my alto flute, Gilbert and I are chasing each other around with our musical phrases. It’s a fun and playful track that makes us smile.

  7. Golden Temple - Suzanne Teng, dizi (Chinese bamboo flute) Playing my dizi, a Chinese bamboo flute, I am transported to a landscape with a “Golden Temple” in the distance.

  8. Farewell Miranda - Suzanne Teng, bamboo flute You may wonder who Miranda is…”Farewell to Miranda,” played on a bamboo flute, is named after…well…it’s a secret! ; )

  9. Calling the Raven - Suzanne Teng, ocarina/Gilbert Levy, saz (Turkish long necked lute) “Calling the Raven” - The simplicity of how I played the ocarina in this piece is different from how I find I usually play it. The simple melody on the low chamber followed by the response of the higher chamber felt like a call to a special animal spirit. We have a lot ravens who visit us on our property and we always enjoy their dances, their bathing in our fountain and their majestic black bodies soaring overhead. Gilbert adds his magic on the saz, a Turkish long necked stringed instrument.

  10. Sounding the Bell - Suzanne Teng, bass flute/Gilbert Levy, various metal found objects "Sounding the Bell” - The creative folks at The Tank have collected a wonderful assortment of metal objects that they have lovingly placed on the floor near the center of The TANK. I’m sure that they have some magical moments creating sounds with them. They invited us to explore with them and that we did. Their ring is longer than any other ring we experienced. When I was studying with Thich Nhat Hanh, I learned we don’t strike a bell, we sound the bell. I always appreciated the gentleness of those words.

  11. The Crossing - Suzanne Teng, bass Native American style flute (Woodsounds Flutes) “The Crossing” features a beautiful bass Native American style flute made by Brent Haines of Woodsounds flutes. The deepness of that flute in the space invited the image of an ancient people crossing over their sacred lands.

  12. Una -Suzanne Teng, bass flute “Una” is actually the first piece we recorded that day, but felt right as a closing piece. From the first notes that came from my bass flute, I was relishing in the the long tones and reverberation that floated through that dark, vast space.

Whisper was written during the pandemic, when times were (and still can be) very lonely and frightening. We wanted to create soothing, gentle, and quiet music that helped comfort those who listened to it. We discovered that within the intimate and serene music that was coming out was a deep emotional expression that was healing for us and we hope will be healing for our listeners as well.

Nine tracks featuring Suzanne's trademark soulful playing on alto, bass and bamboo flutes and Gilbert's lush accompaniment on saz, dulcimer, Inuk (hybrid guitar), Rav and Hang hand pan drums and keyboards. With Dann Torres on guitars and yayli tanbur and Jon Ossman on bass and dilruba.

Ethereal and evocative instrumental world music at its best…exotic flutes, strings and percussion from around the world dance together to create an ancient yet modern global groove.

"Mystic Journey takes you there.  Close your eyes, trust, and you will go somewhere else.  When you return, you'll be different... better.  Your inner windshield wipers will have washed off what you don't need.  What you need... is a Mystic Journey.” - John Densmore (The Doors)

Mystic Journey has an eagerly anticipated new release, “Kingdom of Mountains” full of mystical and evocative instrumental world music at its best, with rare and colorful flutes, strings and percussion from around the world that dance together to create an ancient yet modern global groove. Ten gorgeous tracks take the listener on a journey around the world and beyond, with a theme of peace and tranquility uniting the pieces into one mystical, musical journey.

Mystic Journey is Suzanne Teng (world flutes), Gilbert Levy (world strings and percussion), Dann Torres (guitar and oud), and Jon Ossman (bass and dilruba). This unique world music ensemble creates a new type of instrumental music that is ethereal and exotic, soulful and healing, and “Sensual and Serene,” as described by Billboard Magazine.

Mystic Journey has created music that is not only critically acclaimed, but has won them numerous awards such as the Independent Music Awards (twice), International Acoustic Music Awards, and the Los Angeles Music Awards. Their music has been licensed for hundreds of independent film and video projects and was featured on the show America’s Got Talent. Recognized not only for their musicianship and high production quality, their recordings have been described as sacred, relaxing and heart opening and their work has been used in numerous healing recordings, films and videos, including a special CD compilation of their pieces created by the pharmaceutical company Genentech that was distributed to over 50,000 patients to aid in their recovery.

“Mystic Journey…lifts the listener to a place where beauty, ecstasy and tranquility reside” (Whole Life Times) both in recordings and live performances, as demonstrated in venues where they have performed such as the Dalai Lama’s International World Festival of Sacred Music, where they were featured artists each year of the festival.

Husband and wife team Teng and Levy wrote all of the pieces on this new album Kingdom of Mountains whose 10 tracks feature numerous rare and beautiful instruments from around the world. Their earlier albums were released under Suzanne Teng (Mystic Journey and Enchanted Wind) as well as Suzanne Teng & Mystic Journey (Miles Beyond), but over the years, as they performed around the country and internationally, the ensemble developed a magical synergy that is embraced in this exciting new release, and co-bandleaders Teng and Levy decided they wanted to move forward as simply Mystic Journey.

Gilbert Levy, born and raised in New Orleans, began playing drums at an early age and by his late teens was performing professionally in R&B bands in clubs on Bourbon Street and with jazz greats such as Wynton and Branford Marsalis. Levy moved to Los Angeles and played pop music in numerous bands and on several major label recording projects.

His years of experience in both pop/rock/jazz as well as world music give Gilbert the ability to create rhythms that are musical and music that is rhythmic. He is known for his expressive and exuberant performances both onstage and in recordings. He credits his years of North Indian classical music studies for creating his unique style. He also plays African and Middle Eastern hand percussion as well as a very unique personalized drum set and the evocative Swiss metal hand drum called the “hang” which is featured on much of their music.

Years ago, after a hand injury that led him to take a break from hand drums, he started to explore stringed instruments and the album features beautiful performances on the African bass harp (ngoni) on the track “Midnight in Bamako” and the bass dulcimer and Turkish saz on numerous tracks. He also used his extraordinary technical expertise to engineer and mix the album.

The Los Angeles Times has described Suzanne Teng as a “brilliant flutist” who “plays music for the soul.” Originally from Berkeley, California, she received her Master’s degree in music from Boston University’s School for the Arts and, after traveling across the globe, decided to further her passion for world music, pursuing her Ph.D. in ethnomusicology at UCLA where her focus was on music and healing.

Suzanne plays an extensive array of flutes from around the world, some of which are featured on Kingdom of Mountains. Many of the tracks feature her on the deep and soulful alto and bass flutes. She is a YAMAHA artist representing the low flutes (also called Harmony Flutes) on which she is well known and recognized worldwide for her unique style of playing. She plays the Chinese bamboo flute (dizi) on “Delicate Rainbow Flower,” the rare Chinese gourd wind instrument (hulusi) on “Yunnan,” bass Native American flute on “Kingdom of Mountains,” and bamboo flute on the entrancing piece “I Dream of a Castle.” Listening to Suzanne’s emotional flute lines , you can feel your heart opening, as one of her passions is to create music that is healing and transportive. Music Connection Magazine wrote that in “Teng’s delightful flute performances…joy emanates from her soul when she plays..”

Recognized in the industry for her skillful, creative and moving flute playing, she can be heard on hundreds of recordings and soundtracks, including commercials for Kleenex, Pepsi, Dodge, Johnny Walker, soundtracks for video games “Myst” and “Prince of Persia,” children’s shows Emmy-winning “Tumble Leaf “(PBS), “Miss Spider,” and “Babar and the Adventures of Badou,” and the film “300” and has performed live on several of the Survivor finale shows.

Fellow bandmates Dann and Jon are seasoned Los Angeles musicians who have performed and recorded extensively. Dann M. Torres is a multi-instrumentalist with an affection for acoustic experimentation and electronic manipulation. Well versed in a variety of musical styles and idioms, from world fusion to post-rock, experimental and ambient jazz, Torres’ divergent approach to sound design seeks to deconstruct genres and bring elements of them together into something that is new, compelling and unique.  Torres has worked with Solace, Naked Rhythm, Shaman's Dream, Azam Ali and a variety of other diverse musicians both in the studio and in improvised performance.  In Mystic Journey, Dann plays the oud, acoustic guitar and electric sitar.

Jon Ossman grew up in New Paltz, NY, lived in New York City for many years and then moved to Los Angeles. He calls himself “a lucky rebel who has seen most of this planet from a stage behind a bass.” Jon has recorded and toured with many of the greats such as Marc Cohn, Blood Sweat and Tears, Paula Cole and Chris Botti and also writes music for films, infomercials and videos. He also plays sitar and the hauntingly beautiful Indian fiddle called Dilruba with skill and delicacy, adorning the magical opening track “Subhadra” with a yearning that transports the listener to an ancient and holy time.

"Sensual and Serene..." as described by Billboard Magazine, the hauntingly beautiful flute melodies twirl with magical music played on harps, percussion, and exotic stringed instruments played by 19 master musicians from around the world.

Topanga Dreams Since 1988, I've lived in Topanga, California. This small mountain town has taught me the true meaning of community. By being there for each other, we can make dreams come true. May all your dreams come true...

Katyia's Dance This song has evolved from being a solo dance performance piece in our Mystic Journey shows into a passionate tango...for two. So grab someone you love and enjoy the dance!

China Lily This flute was a gift from my Dize (rhymes with pizza) teacher and is one of my favorites. Whenever I play it, I am transported to a place of inner peace and stillness.

Lhasa Love I found this melody in a book of traditional Chinese folk songs, It was called Tibetan Dance before we transformed it into a lively multicultural boogie!

Aduman Although there are many dialects spoken in the West African region of Guinea and Mali, the universal word for "sweet" amongst all the tribes is aduman.

Darjeeling Sunrise Inspired by an Indian sunrise raga, this song reflects the experience that I had when I was on top of Tiger Hill in Darjeeling, India, witnessing a magical sunrise illuminating the awesome Himalayan mountains.

Gilbert Levy was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. With an early love for drums, he purchased his first drum set with the money he received for his Bar Mitzvah. Since there were already 40 drummers in his school program, Gilbert chose to study the trumpet and tuba in order to play in the high school band. His passion for drumming won out though, and he was soon performing professionally as a drum set player in R & B bands in clubs on Bourbon Street and with jazz greats such as Wynton Marsalis. Gilbert moved to Los Angeles in his 20's to further his musical career and fell into the world of pop music. After playing in numerous bands and working on several major label recording projects, he grew tired of the Los Angeles music scene and took a sabbatical from music. He then discovered world music after hearing tabla virtuoso Trilok Gurtu and began intensive studies on the tabla with Pandit Ravi Bellare. Gilbert has since developed an ability to play just about any drum he picks up and is a specialist on the Indian devotional drums, the khol and pekawaj, on which he is the primary accompanying instrument for numerous kirtan chanters (devotional Sanskrit call-and-response chanting). His unique drum kit includes drums from Africa and the Middle East blended with tom tom and cymbals. His musical style blends traditional rhythms with funk and R&B and his ability to create unique drum patterns keeps him in demand as a performer and recording artist.
